About Lawrence
Lawrence has been in practice since 1994 and has worked at several of the largest law firms in Singapore before deciding to join friends in a new start up firm.
Lawrence is an adjunct lecturer with the Singapore Institute of Management (in conjunction with the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology) as well as a tutor with the Board of Legal Education for the Post Graduate Law Course. He is a Principal Mediator with the Singapore Mediation Centre and is also an Accredited Adjudicator with the Singapore Mediation Centre for the purposes of the Building Construction Industry Security of Payment Act.
He has also co-authored the book "Laws and Practice of Injunctions in Singapore". Lawrence was described in Who's Who Legal: Singapore 2008 as a leading lawyer in the field of construction.
Areas of Practice
Lawrence practice is primarily in respect of civil and commercial litigation but specialises in Building and Construction Law. He acts for and advise statutory boards, developers, contractors, architects, engineers and other consultants in construction related disputes, in both litigation and arbitration (domestic and international). Lawrence is also active in drafting all forms of building related contracts and standard forms for developers, contractors, suppliers, and consultants at various levels in the building chain. Lawrence has also defended professionals in relation to charges brought under the Building Control Act.
Apart from construction matters, Lawrence has experience in other commercial, civil and criminal litigation cases including shareholders dispute, joint venture disagreements, insolvency, tenancy, employment and personal injury cases.
Lawrence also advises and represents clients in respect of criminal cases including offences under the Penal Code, Prevention of Corruption Act, Employment Act, Immigration Act, Employment of Foreign Worker Act, and others.
Experience
Some of the matters he has handled include:
- Advising and representing statutory boards, developers, main contractors and sub-contractors in numerous multi-million dollar claims in both litigation and arbitration proceedings.
- Advising and representing architects, professional engineers and Management Corporations in various claims in tort and contract.
- Advising on disputes concerning En-bloc sales in both majority and minority owner situations.
- Representing various parties in respect of disputes pertaining to building and construction disputes, in particular with respect to claims for liquidated damages/extensions of time, loss and expenses, wrongful termination, injunctions in respect of the calling of Performance Bonds;
- Advising on contentious and non contentious matters in respect of overseas projects including projects in China, Vietnam, Myanmar and Malaysia.
- Advising developers, contractors and consultants on various standard form of building contracts, including the JCT (design and build contract), ICE, FIDIC, Public Sector Standard Terms of Contract (PSCOC) (both standard form and design & build) and SIA contracts.
- Advising and drafting of EPCM contracts for companies, including those in the construction, pharmaceutical, energy sectors
- Advising and defending Professionals in respect of offenses under the Building Control Act, Architects Act.
- Advising judicial managers, liquidators, receivers and managers in respect of Insolvency Laws.
